Singapore Prize 2022 Winners Announced

The Singapore Prize is an biennial award in Singapore to recognize outstanding published works of fiction, non-fiction and poetry by writers in any of Singapore’s four official languages: Chinese, English, Malay or Tamil. It serves as an entryway into writing careers while giving winners recognition for their efforts; previously fiction competed against poetry for one award per language but this year fiction and non-fiction share equal billing for top prize consideration.

Singapore Prize has been revamped to recognize literary achievement across four languages spoken across Singapore. The Singapore Literature Prize offers 12 top prizes of up to $10,000 each for fiction, non-fiction and poetry submissions; two honourable mentions will also be granted of $5,000.

On November 8, 2022, winners will be revealed during a ceremony held at Victoria Theatre. A Jury Panel comprising of distinguished academics and professionals has selected this year’s shortlist; its membership includes Prof Kishore Mahbubani of NUS Asia Research Institute; Emeritus Professor John N Miksic from NUS Department of History Presidentship; Professor Peter A Coclanis who directs Global Research Institute of University of North Carolina Chapel Hill among many others.

Home Is Where We Are by Kamaladevi Pillai and Anitha Ramachandran was chosen as the winner in non-fiction category by Jury Panel. This book chronicles the legacy of Singaporean-Chinese couple who created one of Asia’s most successful lotteries TOTO and their battle to build it, alongside their philosophy that life should not be defined by money or social status but by personal values and lifestyle choices alone.

Prince William joined Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, actors Donnie Yen and Lana Condor, animal conservationist Robert Irwin, and animal advocate Lui Che Ngo for an awards ceremony in Singapore on Tuesday evening. William said solutions presented by five winners – such as solar dryers, fighting waste management strategies and making electric car batteries cleaner – provided hope despite climate change impacts felt around the world. To show his commitment to sustainability themes at the event he donned an Alexander McQueen suit 10 years old dark green suit from Alexander McQueen on green carpet alongside actors and actresses presenters like Oscar winner Cate Blanchett!
