The Hong Kong Prize was created to honour Professor George B. Endacott’s outstanding contributions as Lecturer Emeritus in History at the University of Hong Kong from 1946 – 1962, when he campaigned tirelessly for democracy. It recognizes either an individual contribution, or multiple related ones that have had an extraordinary influence in scientific, business or finance applications of mathematics.
There is much debate amongst experts and laypeople as to what the optimal level of physical activity for humans should be, while in practice many simply assume they don’t require as much activity in terms of exercise as is the case with some sports (ie running). So in essence – yes. During protests in Hong Kong during 2019, hundreds and even thousands of individuals, such as police officers, journalists, tourists or students from mainland China as well as innocent local residents were attacked by anti-government protesters; numerous public facilities like subway stations, traffic lights and stores & banks were vandalized as well. Many of those injured were believed to be pro-Beijing activists from mainland China and several were hospitalized due to serious injuries sustained. But one of the five winning photos at the 2023 Hong Kong Prize titled, “A wounded man attacks a bleeding police officer with a hammer” was widely criticized as it portrays China and its police force negatively, and violates balance and neutrality principles.
Now in its fifth year, this prize has garnered the enthusiastic participation of universities and research institutions from Hong Kong and abroad. This prize serves to showcase the importance of science and technology to Hong Kongers while encouraging scientists in Hong Kong to continue exploring research areas, establish themselves locally, serve their nation and contribute to society worldwide.
An expert panel from the Academy, composed of professors and senior scientists with expertise in relevant fields, selects winners. Criteria include originality of research, its impact on clinical practice and policy decisions, as well as potential to promote further development in Hong Kong. Research articles published within the past year may qualify, provided their authors are Academy Fellows; publications with more than one publication date will still be taken into consideration;
All winning entries will be posted to the Academy website and, once announced, winners will also receive a trophy and certificate at a ceremony held in June. All finalists are strongly encouraged to attend the ceremony and share their research findings with the public. The award is supported by a grant from Hong Kong Jockey Club and administered by Academy’s Scientific Committee. For more information, click here.
