At Tuesday’s ceremony for this year’s Singapore Prize Award program, 15 finalists included manufacturers of solar-powered dryers, a soil carbon marketplace and groups working to make electric car batteries cleaner, restore Andean forests and deter illegal fishing – among them several products created from solar energy or that reduce carbon emissions from vehicles or batteries. British Prince William inaugurated this 10-year award program through his Royal Foundation charity back in 2020, with hopes that climate change would eventually ease. He noted how each solution showcased at this year’s award program provided concrete proof that “hope does remain”. He concluded by saying how solutions presented demonstrated there remains hope as climate change worsens.
At his weeklong tour through Southeast Asia – including Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia – The Earthshot Prize chairman met with government officials, business leaders and young entrepreneurs from each award winner organization to discuss how to expand and accelerate the impact of their innovative solutions with others in their country and region. Furthermore, 2023 winners had the opportunity to attend special events and activations activities hosted by The Earthshot Prize family as part of a week-long special events calendar organized by The Temasek Foundation family.
This year, The Edge Singapore made an outstanding contribution to the awards by garnering eight nominations across four categories for its writers and editors. Multiple covers, such as its story on potential consolidation of Singapore telco market or cover on semiconductor firms also earned multiple nods from judges in multiple categories; additionally its coverage of coronavirus pandemic received recognition in Doing What It Takes category.
In its inaugural edition, the Singapore Prize aims to recognize outstanding individuals and organisations that have contributed significantly to Singapore’s development through science, technology, innovation, entrepreneurship or peer review. As part of a high-profile peer-review programme with winners recognized publicly. Prize recipients receive cash awards as well as medallions. All awards are coordinated by President’s Office and Science and Technology Agency of Singapore.
Winners of the 2023 Singapore prize will be celebrated at an award ceremony at Mediacorp Campus on Tuesday, 7 November. Following this event will be an entire week-long program of special events and ‘local activations’ activities hosted by The Earthshot Prize and Temasek for public engagement.
The 2023 Winners will join a global network of innovators working on innovative climate solutions with support from Temasek Foundation. They’ll enjoy various forms of support ranging from networking opportunities and access to global markets and investment capital to taking advantage of Conservation International (CI) expertise and vast networks, while their work will also leverage Conservation International’s longstanding work highlighting and safeguarding nature’s benefits for humanity – with their deep knowledge in conservation programs and sustainable financing adding extra strength in helping their work support those of both winners and Finalists alike!
