A Sydney Prize is an award given to individuals working hard to change our world for the better. These prizes may be given for helping those in need, promoting science amongst the general public or any number of other causes – they’re typically decided upon on a national basis and serve as a great way to recognize individuals for their efforts.
Overland magazine and the Malcolm Robertson Foundation co-host an annual competition known as the Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize, rewarding one author with $5000 prize money and publication both online and in Overland magazine. Two runners-up will also receive awards. This year, judges are looking for travel stories that go beyond mere location planning – ideal entries will reveal something deeper about life or humanity that speaks directly to readers.

Sophia Jactel from Art History won this year with her paper Domesticity and Diversions: Josef Israels’ The Smoker as a Symbol of Peasant Culture and Home in Nineteenth-Century Holland under Professor Sally Cornelison’s guidance – making a significant contribution to Domesticities: The Art of Daily Life exhibition.
The Sidney Hook Memorial Award was established to commemorate a renowned American philosopher and Phi Beta Kappa member whose legacy continues today. The prize recognizes those who demonstrate outstanding national accomplishment in three fields of liberal arts education – scholarship, undergraduate teaching and leadership for liberal arts education – with winners recognized at our Triennial Council Meetings.
Clay Sydney Ceramics is offering its second annual scholarship for Australian undergraduate students who demonstrate academic merit and an affinity with ceramics. This opportunity is open to all NSW, ACT and international students in their first two years of study and will be judged based on both merit and written submission quality.

The Sidney Edelstein Prize is presented annually by SHOT to an author of an outstanding book in the history of technology. This work should represent an exceptionally high standard of scholarship and contribute to our understanding of humanity through technology and our relationships with it. Books must have been published within three years prior to winning this award, which will then be judged by Hanover faculty members; prize comprises $3500 plus a plaque.
